Governance is the foundation of your AI strategy

Many organizations are beginning to implement Copilot. The focus is often on the capabilities of AI: finding information faster, summarizing emails, performing analyses, or automating repetitive tasks. But during these implementations, we’ve noticed that the biggest challenge is usually not AI itself. The real challenge lies in the data that Copilot works with.

Copilot only shows what users are already allowed to see

A major concern is that Copilot might expose sensitive information. In reality, Copilot respects the existing security settings within Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365. Users are only granted access to information for which they already have permissions. That sounds reassuring, until it turns out that SharePoint sites are shared too broadly or that sensitive information isn’t adequately protected.

Within Dynamics 365 and Dataverse as well, Copilot features build on the existing security structure. Copilot for Sales, Copilot for Service, and AI agents adhere to the same security roles, table permissions, and field-level security as your users.

Governance is an essential part of the implementation

A successful AI strategy therefore requires clear agreements regarding access rights, data classification, security, and information ownership. Organizations that have that foundation in place can derive value from AI solutions much more quickly.

In a recent case study, we saw a real-world example where a well-configured Copilot agent led to a 20% reduction in support tickets and saved more than 4,400 work hours. That result wasn’t due to AI alone. It was the result of a strong foundation: correct permissions, clear processes, and reliable data.

Conclusion

When organizations consider Copilot, they often ask, “What can AI do for us?” The better question is, “Are our data and access rights ready for AI?” The success of AI isn’t determined by the tool you choose, but by the quality of your data, processes, and access management.

AI is ready. Is your governance as well?
